Solar Bank Vs Regular Power Bank
Hey guys,Just wanted to know people's experience with taking either a solar panel or a power bank on the trail. Section hiking from KEnnedy Meadows to Ashland from August to October. Does anyone have any opinions relating to this and what's the best way to charge your electrics.Is it easy enough to recharge the power bank when you get to resupplies / towns? Is the solar panel more reliable power?I'll be charging an iPhone and a camera battery regularly. I do already own a good solar panel but it doesn't have the capability to store power (needs to charge items directly) so I'll likely have to bring a small capacity power bank anyway.

I have extensive experience using both, the right solar panel is great for most of California, where its exposed and there's lots of solar energy. It became useless once I got under the tree canopies and then eventually the mist and rain of the PNW.I had a 16,000mAh battery pack I used on the CDT, it worked very well and was much smaller and easier to deal with. The biggest con for me was recharging the pack in towns, it would take all day or overnight and it forced me to stay overnight in hotels to charge the pack, which cost a lot of money. I had different priorities, you could get away with a much smaller battery pack than me.I like dipping in and out for the resupply and a quick bite to eat and I wasn't able to achieve that with my battery pack, so I'm back to using my panel.Just my 2 cents. I did the battery pack thing up to my current point at mile 830.
It works great but keeping it charged is a pain in the ass and as someone else mentioned: expensive since it takes so long to charge. I just picked up a solar charger in Bishop and I'm looking forward to see how well it works. My plan is to go with both, charging my battery pack as necessary as I hike.
My hiking buddy uses a solar charger exclusively and I've been eyeing it jealously for the last 200 miles, I was surprised by how well it works. I've heard nothing but bad things about them online but a lot of people on trail seem to like them.
